At U of T Music, our composers are heard. This is true for our students and graduates as well as for our composition faculty. The goal of the program is to assist students in the acquisition of skills and perspective for the purpose of creating music. The depth and breadth associated with the courses allows for individual nurturing and artistic growth. Aside from studying with some of Canada’s best composers, individuals take upper-level theory classes in analysis, counterpoint, orchestration, electroacoustic music, computer applications, and conducting.
All students receive weekly private instruction and participate in a series of workshops and presentations known as the Composer’s Forum. The Faculty of Music also hosts several guest composers each year. In addition, there are ample opportunities for composers to collaborate across the years and within programs. Students also have their compositions performed in Student Composer Recitals held throughout the school year.
