The Halls We Haunt focuses on visual storytelling, using carefully curated subject matter in an illustrative style to evoke narrative. I have never been able to marry myself to a particular medium and, as such, this body of work employs a variety of artistic techniques, combining elements of traditional painting, drawing and digital illustration. The use of limited color palettes emphasizes the value of each work to create depth, with color being applied sparingly to draw the eye to points of interest. My process is influenced by The Chronicles of Harris Burdick, a collection of short children’s stories, each of which is based off a unique and unsettling black and white illustration. As for the subject matter of the work, the piece depicts the focal location of my in-progress novel, “Regarding: Florian.” The work seeks to mirror the emotional reaction the characters within the novel have to the space. By leaving the interpretation ambiguous, I encourage the viewer to imagine their own narrative as they view the work.
