Slavery in Fast Fashion
Amanda Jones and Brytton Bjorngaard (mentor), Department of Art, Music, and Theatre
Many people believe that slavery is a thing of the past, yet there are millions of people enslaved today and the proof is likely in your closet. The fast fashion industry delivers stylish clothing at a reasonable price, but oftentimes this low price is only possible because of the cheap labor of exploited workers. The real cost of these stylish clothes is the livelihood of those who picked the cotton to make the fabric and sweatshop workers who sewed the final product. Though some of these workers are paid, they are not paid a living wage and have no other options for employment. These workers fall victim to the horrors of modern slavery in the fast fashion industry.
My posters use different visual methods in hopes of spreading awareness about the issues that many people contribute to by purchasing clothes from unethical retailers and provides information about what this problem looks like in our world. My work challenges people to take a look at what they purchase, think about where it came from, and who may have made it. In order to stop slavery in fast fashion, people must be informed and understand that their clothing harms the well-being of the workers who made it.
