Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that everyone has the right to housing and yet forty-seven percent of adults surveyed by the Habitat for Humanity experience unstable or insecure housing situations at some point in their lives. Habitat for Humanity seeks to solve issues of housing instability and insecurity as they believe affordable housing plays a critical role in strong and stable communities. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage.
The content in my work expresses the issues of poor housing conditions and the homeless crisis in America. Within my work, I do not simply address the issue at hand, I also include a call to action for the audience via key words such as “build” and “volunteer” along with key visuals such as my blueprint background. The idea of “home” is front and center for all of the works in this series. Overall, I utilized a playful and amusing style to bring an optimistic feeling to a serious issue. I hope this positive spin can capture viewers’ attention and encourage volunteers to assist with the cause.
