Article 5: "No one shall be subjected to torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment."
When someone enter the prisons system, they lose few constitution rights, however, there are still rights they have, medical and mental care, disability, and discrimination are a few examples, (for more information go to hg.org). Article 5 also falls under the rights these people have, however, it its often forgotten, especially when you look at women’s prisons.
Women in prisons face degrading treatment during their time there. Many women who enter the system struggles with mental issues, which often are made worse by the treatment prisons were created with men in mind; therefore, they lack knowledge of women's needs, including female hygiene. Sanitary products are seen as luxury items. Thus, these women often barter or create their products, which leads to other health problems.
The four-posters I created each use a different technique, flat color, illustration, text only, and photography. I wanted to convey the emotions women in prisons might be struggling with bringing awareness to the issues they face.
