The College of Science and Mathematics (CoSM) secured a NSF S-STEM award to develop a scholarship program to attract and retain highly talented, low-income students who are pursuing baccalaureate degrees in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, mathematics, neuroscience, and physics. Recognizing that students who come to Norwich University with less experience in mathematics are less likely to graduate with a degree in a STEM discipline, the program aims to promote the success of this students by implementing curricular improvements in the first-year mathematic sequence. This presentation highlights the lessons learned in the process of securing and executing the NSF S-STEM award and implementing a corequisite model of precalculus and calculus for first-year STEM students.
