OISE offers two graduate programs designed to train teachers:
• Master of Teaching in Teaching (MT)
• Master of Arts in Child Study and Education (MA CSE)
Both programs are two-year full-time graduate programs that result in a recommendation to the Ontario College of Teachers (https://oct.ca) for teaching certification in Ontario. These programs are not available to take part-time. They are also not available as online or distance only programs.
The MT program offers streams at the Primary/Junior, Junior/Intermediate and Intermediate/Senior level. It is the same length as most BEd programs, but contains more instructional hours and offers smaller class sizes. This allows examination of educational theories and best practices in greater depth than is possible in a conventional BEd, as well as more contact time with instructors. As a graduate program, it exposes students to educational research across a wide variety of educational disciplines, and requires them to complete a Major Research Paper. As such, students are eligible to apply for graduate awards (Ontario Graduate Scholarship, SSHRC grants, and others).
The MA in Child Study and Education program is dedicated to the Primary/Junior level. In comparison to the Master of Teaching, it offers a stronger focus on psychology, with emphasis on special education and early childhood learning. Although this program does not include a Master’s thesis (but offers the option of completing a Major Research Paper), students participate in internships as well as practicum placements in the classroom.
