SBP 26 - Evaluation of Total Coliforms, E.Coli, and Enterococcus in Centennial College Fountain Drinking Water

Centennial College, a prominent educational institution in Canada, operates five diverse campuses that provide drinking water to thousands of staff and students through public fountains strategically placed throughout their facilities. These fountains, accessed by hundreds of individuals daily, are susceptible to various forms of contamination, including contact contamination from frequent use and potential quality issues stemming from inadequate water treatment or maintenance practices. 

To ensure a thorough and scientifically sound approach, our study includes standard water quality analysis techniques such as:

• Sample collection: Systematic gathering of water samples from various fountains across all five Centennial College campuses. Chosen fountains for sampling are identified by each campus’ maintenance facility as their highest volume fountain. 
• Microbiological testing: Utilization of water filtration and selective medias to detect and quantify E. coli and coliform bacteria.
• Chemical analysis: Assessment and verification of any cultures grown on agar medias.
• Data interpretation: Comprehensive analysis of results to identify patterns, trends, and potential areas of concern.

By combining these methodologies, our research aims to provide a detailed view of the drinking water quality at Centennial College, ultimately contributing to the ongoing efforts to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all members of the college community.
