AR 02 - PhysioBot: A Rehabilitation Robot

What is PhysioBot?

PhysioBot is a pioneering project that stands at the intersection of robotics and physiotherapy. It is a robotic exoskeleton designed specifically to address knee joint rehabilitation needs from the comfort of the user’s home. This innovative device embodies effective rehabilitation tools such as Range of Motion training and Strength training.  PhysioBot empowers therapists with real-time insights and unparalleled control through the dedicated PhysioBot webapp. Therapists can also delve into detailed progress reports, overseeing each training session. This data not only reflects the patient's journey but also helps the therapist to fine tune future therapy sessions, ensuring every step is a step forward.

What Does PhysioBot Do?

PhysioBot is not just a device, it's a personalized pillar of support for those on the tough journey to regain mobility and strength post-injury. With its precision actuation and control, PhysioBot actuates the leg through controlled movements, crucial for effective rehabilitation. PhysioBot aims to gradually increase the mobility of a post-surgery knee by assisting to perform Range of Motion or ROM training. 

Additionally, PhysioBot is equipped with resistance training features, designed to support users during the strength regaining stage of their rehabilitation journey. This segment of the PhysioBot's functionality focuses on isometric training, where the user is challenged to exert as much force as they can against PhysioBot. This translates into a direct measurement of the strength exerted by the user. 

PhysioBot advocates collaborative rehabilitation, where therapists can track detailed progress reports, observing improvements in range of motion and strength, session by session. This feedback is invaluable as it can be used to customize the rehabilitation program. The PhysioBot webapp is a platform where therapists can upload training prescriptions based on this feedback.

PhysioBot has been developed to be a humane robotic companion. The lightweight aluminum frame and strategically placed cushioning ensures a secure and comfortable fit throughout the therapy session. PhysioBot prioritizes safety.  Equipped with a plethora of safety features and safeguards, PhysioBot eliminates the risk of injuries during use. This makes PhysioBot a trustworthy companion on the path to recovery, especially for those who might hesitate to perform exercises without the direct supervision of a therapist.

Why Did We Create This Project?

The genesis of PhysioBot is rooted in a deeply personal experience within our team. One of our members underwent ACL surgery and encountered firsthand the challenges associated with traditional physiotherapy methods. Traditional physiotherapy often requires frequent in-person appointments, which can be challenging for individuals with various limitations. Transportation limitations, economic constraints, scheduling conflicts, or even geographical remoteness can hinder an individual's ability to receive regular physiotherapy treatment. Recognizing these limitations of existing rehabilitation approaches, we were inspired to develop a solution that would revolutionize knee rehabilitation and empower individuals to reclaim mobility and function with confidence. PhysioBot offers a compelling solution by providing a safe and effective alternative for home-based rehabilitation.

By offering a personalized, convenient, and accessible solution for knee joint rehabilitation, PhysioBot holds immense potential to transform the landscape of physiotherapy. This innovative project paves the way for improved patient outcomes and empowers individuals to take charge of their health and well-being from the comfort of their home.
