Impacts of Digital Transformation on Sustainability and Financial Performance in Manufacturing Supply Chains

The digital transformation brought on by Industry 4.0 technologies confers many benefits for the supply chains of manufacturing companies. This review explores the impacts of digital transformation initiatives on manufacturing supply chain performance across emerging economies, with a focus on both financial and sustainability outcomes. Empirical studies across several geographical settings such as China, Pakistan, India, Turkey, and other emerging markets were analyzed, highlighting significant patterns in the implementation of digital transformation across organizations' supply chains and the resulting outcomes. The included studies largely applied quantitative methodologies, with structural equation modelling being the most common. Several studies indicated increased financial performance and supply chain efficiency as a result of digital transformation. Studies also found significant improvements in firm environmental performance measures. From a thematic point, the studies suggest a combination of several digital technologies, big data analytics, IoT, and AI in particular, offer the highest success in organizational performance. Several studies also emphasize the importance of supply chain integration as a mediating factor for the impact of digital transformation on performance and efficiency. The review contributes to the understanding of how manufacturing firms in emerging economies can efficiently leverage digital transformation to achieve both sustainability and financial goals without a tradeoff.
