Mallika Gupte HP Intern

Hi, my name is Mallika Gupte, and I’m excited to share my experiences as a Sustainable Impact Intern at HP Canada. This summer, I had the privilege of working on a range of projects that not only deepened my understanding of sustainability but also allowed me to make a tangible impact on HP’s mission to be the most sustainable and just technology company.

One of the most significant projects I was involved in was updating HP Canada’s sustainability proof points. This project was critical in maintaining HP’s leadership as Canada’s most sustainable technology company. I conducted a comprehensive competitor audit to ensure no other company could challenge this claim, and then collaborated closely with HP’s legal team to secure the necessary approvals. Once finalized, I helped publish the updated proof points on HP Canada’s external website, ensuring that our sustainability achievements were communicated clearly and accurately to the public. It was incredibly rewarding to see how this work reinforced HP’s brand and commitment to sustainability.

In addition to this, I was responsible for conducting data audits on two critical platforms—HP2B and Ecomedes. For those who may not be familiar, HP2B is an internal tool that tracks product-level sustainability attributes, such as carbon footprint and recycled plastic content, while Ecomedes is a platform that helps businesses and customers find sustainable products based on environmental certifications. My role involved validating and reporting on the data within these platforms to ensure their accuracy and reliability. This experience gave me a deep understanding of the importance of data integrity in sustainability reporting and how it underpins the trust that customers place in a company’s sustainability claims.

My work wasn’t limited to data and systems, though. I also had the opportunity to contribute to HP’s social impact initiatives, particularly through the Digital Equity Accelerator. I supported three incredible charities—Jays Care Foundation, Access to Success, and Chapter One—by helping them secure funding through grant applications. In total, I completed applications for six charities as part of the 40 Days of Doing Good initiative, and I’m proud to say that four of them were successfully funded. This was a deeply fulfilling aspect of my internship, as it allowed me to see firsthand how HP’s resources can make a real difference in communities by supporting education and social equity.

Beyond my project work, I was also actively involved in organizing and participating in various volunteer events. One highlight was our shoreline cleanup at HP’s Spectrum Way office, where we spent the day cleaning up and picking up garbage around the streets of Toronto. It was a great way to give back to the local community while also reinforcing the importance of environmental stewardship. Another memorable experience was the tour of ERS, the recycling plant where HP sends its old products for recycling and refurbishment. This tour provided invaluable insights into how HP supports the circular economy by ensuring that end-of-life products are given new life through sustainable processes.
