Melisa Marin

This poster presents insights from my internship at Loblaw, one of Canada’s largest private-sector employers, where I was involved in advancing their sustainability and social responsibility initiatives. Loblaw is committed to reducing plastic waste by ensuring all packaging is reusable or recyclable by 2025, achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, and eliminating food waste to landfills by 2030, while donating surplus food to those in need. On the social front, Loblaw focuses on diversity and inclusion, with extensive employee training, significant representation milestones, and strong support for women’s health and childhood hunger.

During my internship, I worked on evaluating vendor compliance for sustainable seafood, engaging with third-party certifiers, supporting sustainable palm oil initiatives, and developing strategies to communicate product environmental impacts. These projects deepened my understanding of the complexities involved in balancing sustainability with business needs.

This experience underscored the importance of global cooperation, innovative technologies, and circular economy principles. Loblaw’s dedication to reducing environmental impact and promoting social equity sets a high standard for industry leadership, and I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to these efforts and learn from their approach.
