As the Environmental Coordinator Co-op at Liberty Utilities, I played a vital role in ensuring environmental compliance across various operations. I was involved in multiple projects which helped me to gain an understanding of how environmental compliance is achieved in a corporate setting.
For instance, I developed a company-wide Environmental Management System (EMS) Awareness Training for new employees, enhancing their understanding of environmental compliance within their roles. I also updated oil Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans for sites across New Hampshire, ensuring that our employees are informed on oil spill prevention and management. In addition to these responsibilities, I supported an ongoing litigation case, showcasing my ability to manage complex environmental issues. My other tasks included organizational, administrative, and research-based tasks that improved the efficiency of our team’s work.
Throughout the internship, I gained valuable insights into the implementation of environmental regulations across North America. I learned that effective communication, collaboration, and relationship-building are essential for maintaining environmental compliance. Moreover, I discovered that a company’s culture, reflected in how employees feel about their work, plays a significant role in achieving organizational goals.
Overall, I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to work with the people at Liberty. This was a great first introduction to the corporate world, and I am excited to continue working with Liberty as it pertains to their ESG data.
