Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority Internship

During my internship at the Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority (RPRA), I played a vital role in supporting Ontario’s transition to a circular economy by contributing to key compliance and optimization projects. RPRA, established by the Government of Ontario, is responsible for enforcing the province’s circular economy laws under the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016 (RRCEA) and the Waste Diversion Transition Act, 2016 (WDTA).

One of my main projects was the Blue Box Audit Performance Procedure, where I conducted jurisdictional scans to evaluate material tracking processes, engaged with stakeholders to map material flow, and researched certification requirements to enhance audit procedures. I also contributed to the Collection Site System Optimization project, where I reviewed and refined over 60,000 collection site entries, developed a template for bulk uploads, and conducted User Acceptance Testing to ensure data accuracy. In the Small Producers Inspection project, I supported the inspection of 25 small producers, ensuring accurate reporting and compliance by managing stakeholder communications and tracking submissions effectively.

Through this internship, I gained a comprehensive understanding of Ontario’s circular economy regulations and the challenges in waste management, such as material recovery, consumer education, and the development of end markets for recyclables.
