History often focuses on African American disenfranchisement that began in the late 19th century. Southern states rewrote their constitutions to eliminate African Americans from the voting booth; however, these new laws that included the literacy test and poll tax did not eliminate all African American voters. These men who continued to exercise their 15th amendment right, need to be recognized and studied as part of the historical narrative.
