During my poster presentation, I intend to discuss what the symptoms, causes, and cures for Laryngitis are. Laryngitis is when there is inflammation of the larynx (voice box). The throat is dry, swallowing becomes difficult, and speech is a hoarse whisper. During my research I will use information gathered from the academic article Characteristics and Voice Outcomes of Ulcerative Laryngitis, by authors Young VN, Gartner-Schimidt JL, Enver N, Rothenberger SD, and Rosen CA. Using this article, I can better understand the effect Laryngitis has on a singer’s voice, even after they have been cured of the illness. Most patients have good voice outcomes following resolution of Laryngitis, although vocal fold mucosal wave abnormalities may persist. This study provides the most detailed report of Laryngitis, disease course and treatment outcomes to date. Additionally, this study is also the first to suggest that earlier initiation of treatment may improve voice outcome after Laryngitis.
