Singers are at risk for developing vocal fold pathologies, especially if they misuse or abuse their voice. The purpose of this research is to identify the symptoms, causes, and cures for singers with vocal fold pathologies, specifically a vocal fold cyst. A vocal fold cyst is defined as a sac filled with either fluid or mucous. This sac then rests on the vocal folds, which leads to asymmetry and a decreased ability to close the vocal folds. Symptoms for this vocal fold pathology include hoarse voice quality, painful phonation, and a desire to cough. In terms of research, methodology will include an overview on research available as well as a case study. The previously mentioned case study will evaluate a singer’s specific diagnosis of vocal fold cysts, along with symptoms and cures. In conclusion, the academic literature will illustrate the usefulness of vocal rest and voice therapy when treating vocal fold cysts. These treatment methods will provide the singer a natural recovery, which will allow for a continuation of a professional singing career. That being said, some cases may call for surgery to remove the cyst, but only after behavioral therapy has failed.
