Quarantine Quilt is a patchwork of fabric scraps from when I made face masks during the early stages of Covid-19. From the hundreds of masks made I managed to keep all the leftover material. In addition to this piece being constructed completely of recycled fabric it is made to be utilized in many ways. There are many practical uses for a quilt Americans have adapted into their traditions, quilts are made and gifted to commemorate but also keep you warm. The pattern of the quilt reflects a game board setting with two seats on either side. I intend for this quilt to be used for a picnic, entertainment, bedding, decoration, warmth, or just for admiration on the wall. It’s important to me that I don’t just make things for one purpose of use instead I try to combine to replace.
Quarantine Quilt took inspiration from the recent restrictions brought on by COVID-19. The past year has shifted public preferences to solitary and distanced pleasures; most of all being outdoors. Quarantine Quilt exploits this unlikely predicament by encouraging its users to enjoy their natural surroundings and give time for the simple pleasures in life. Given the seriousness of quarantine, I attempted to break this tension by stitching a checkerboard in the center of the quilt. Quarantine Quilt has a purpose for each user and stresses the utilitarian nature of textiles, while giving space for unplanned and coincidental aspects of life.
