Historically fruit paintings have held a significant stature in western societies. Still life paintings of fruit for centuries were regarded as a symbol of culture and status. Fresh fruit paintings represented many themes such as; life, fertility, youth, and prosperity. Certain fruits held a symbolic status, while others represented life’s memories, festivities, and special occasions. One example is grapes. Grapes represented lust or pleasure. Fruit even goes as far as being believed to represent the transient nature of our existence. In modern times we no longer hold fruit as these symbolic trophies of stature or class. I want to reawaken our previous desire for observing and admiring fruits. They have unique shapes, marvelous colors, and hold a historic significance.
