Testing new content in the Organic Chemistry Language Assessment Tool

The Organic Chemistry Language Assessment Tool (OCLAT) is being developed to gauge the comprehension and retention of disciplinary language by undergraduate organic chemistry student. The tool uses a combination of CLOZE questions and concept maps to measure several foundational areas of organic chemistry language. The previous version of the OCLAT was difficult for students to complete due to a lack of clarity in some of the CLOZE questions and concept maps. To improve on the isomers section, the CLOZE questions were modified which then required updating the concept map. A new content area was also developed based on reaction dynamics, with accompanying CLOZE questions and concept map. This will expand the scope of the tool. Students that have taken organic chemistry in 2019-21 completed the assessment and the student success data will be shared. The questions were analyzed to determine how well the isomers modifications and the new content area questions work and what modifications may be required for future versions of the OCLAT.
