Fungi are living organisms that visibly resemble plants but are included in the animal kingdom. There are around 5.1 million species of Fungi. Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of fungi that produce and release spores. They play a key role in many natural systems, from helping plants grow to the removal of heavy metals. Fungi have seen use in our food and medical systems, circular economy, and tourism. The cultivation of mushroom-producing fungi has seen immense growth in popularity and production. This has resulted from our increasing knowledge of how to cultivate them and how they can benefit human health. Fungi have been helpful with the idea of the circular economy because they can break down many different types of organic waste and uses as animal feed and building materials. With the growth of ecotourism, guided foraging hikes of mushrooms, and the consumption of traditional mushroom cuisine.
