Populism, Euroskepticism and Migration Policy (Presentation)

The European Migrant Crisis, also referred to as the Refugee Crisis, began in 2015. In the few short years following, it has created a number of changes in individual European Union (EU) member states. As an intergovernmental organization, the EU must manage the diverse needs of its member states; how have the EU's decisions impacted the internal politics of its member states? As with much of the world, the EU has seen a rise in populist narrative, as well as Euroskepticism. How might the refugee crisis have shaped migrant policy and member states' party platforms? This involves a qualitative, comparative case study of four European countries: Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Greece. Each country has unique conditions regarding migration, as well as their roles within the EU, which provides a basis for comparison as well as individual analysis.
