This poster spotlights a classroom project where students were prompted to reimagine Tech's monuments in public spaces. Using
Caroline Randall Williams’ op-ed “You Want a Confederate Monument” as a frame
for reconsidering the purpose of statue placement, students entered the ongoing
conversation of monuments and statues in public spaces by selecting one of
Georgia Tech’s beloved campus statues to study. Ultimately, they produced a
picture book aimed at a K-2 audience that explains the cultural significance
and politics behind why the statue was installed on campus. Students completed several deliverables in
this unit to capture and translate the knowledge they obtained about the statue
to a nonexpert: Ethnography Report, Picture Book, and Digital Read Aloud.
