Philosophy has been taught at the University of Toronto since 1843, and at UTM since 1967. Much has changed in that time, but the department remains Canada’s preeminent philosophy department. U of T Philosophy is an international leader in many subfields of philosophy. Department members take contemporary philosophical problems and their historical antecedents to illuminate one another. Students learn to think logically, creatively, empathetically, and to be able both to see the big picture and think through details.
