A Reading from Homer: The Mystery of an Old Main Lithograph, Ochi

This past summer, a 1973 alumna contacted SUNY Oneonta to ask about a framed lithograph she had rescued before Old Main was torn down. This lithograph, “A Reading from Homer,” by the artist Lawrence Alma-Tadema, depicts a classical scene featuring the poet, Homer, reciting his tales. Undergraduate student Alexis Ochi and her faculty advisor Dr. Susan Goodier have taken on the task of researching this artifact with the support of a Student Academic Fellowship funded by a gift made to the College at Oneonta Foundation by the alumna. By researching lithographs as an art form, the history of education and the “democratization” of education, as well as the meaning and origin of classical imagery, we strove to find out how and why this artifact came to Old Main. The Alden Room and several members of the SUNY Oneonta community offered a variety of resources and ideas. After several weeks of research Alexis has discovered much about the significance of this art piece to the college which she is eager to share with the college community.
