We provide pathways for our students beyond the classroom and within the community, to learn with and from communities while working together on mutually established goals. You’ll find our students (at all degree levels) in senior centers, schools, places of worship, and on the sidelines of kids’ sports practices. They were at free COVID-19 testing sites and engaged in enrolling residents to complete the census and to register to vote. You can spot them presenting legislative resolutions and working with communities to identify needs and action. Here’s what that engagement looks like for nine undergrads.

Our faculty are doing groundbreaking research, like that of J. Margo Brooks Carthon who not only explores how social determinants influence health, but then offers evidence-based solutions such as THRIVE. Or Adriana Perez, who is designing interventions that center the needs of older Latinos, in partnership with community organizations and leaders, to advance cognitive and cardiovascular health.

And finally, we just held our first Summer Innovation Institute focused on collaborative design and co-creation for health equity. The interdisciplinary, five-day workshop was built on the premise that the human-centered approach of design thinking doesn’t guarantee equitable solutions and must be complemented by equity-centered models that can reveal the myriad public health issues that impact our communities.
