  • The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the lived experiences of first-time mothers as they transition into the new role of motherhood and the effect it has on occupational balance. The aim of investigating first-hand perspectives of new mothers is to help prevent adverse outcomes that are commonly experienced due to the disruption of  typical routines. Such disruptions impact overall quality of life and could lead to postpartum depression, maternal attachment issues, feelings of isolation, and overall reduced quality of life. By identifying these indicators, and providing appropriate interventions, society may experience an improvement in maternal health and a reduction in the need for health services may be achieved. The researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with ten first-time mothers in the initial postpartum year. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed for common themes. Findings indicated all mothers experienced decreased engagement in self-care tasks, limited social engagement, and minimal leisure participation.  Nine out of ten of the mothers had difficulty connecting to being a new mom following the birth of their child. The findings of this study can provide implications for future occupational therapy practice in serving this population to decrease maternal stress and improve overall quality of life.
