The Department of Nursing offers both an RN/BSN and two MSN degrees - Education/Leadership and Family Nurse Practitioner. The programs are taught by a highly qualified faculty and offered in a hybrid format, a combination of traditional and online classes. The faculty is dedicated to excellence in nursing, nursing education and the improvement of health care through individual, family and community care.

All programs are designed to accommodate the schedules of employed nurses. The small, friendly campus atmosphere provides for a caring and accessible faculty and staff in a Christian learning environment.

History

In 1991, the RN-BSN program admitted its first students to the program designed for the working registered nurse to complete a bachelor's degree in one year. Since that time, many nurses have completed the BSN degree at LCU. These nurses fulfill a variety of nursing roles providing compassionate care to the patients of the West Texas area and beyond.

The MSN program admitted its inaugural class in 2005.  A 35 hour blended leadership/education program was designed to prepare professional registered nurses for an advanced level of service and certifications in positions of education and leadership across health settings in the 21st century.

In 2011, a new chapter of nursing education began with the creation of the partnership with Covenant School of Nursing. This partnership benefits the Covenant student towards accomplishment of the BSN degree with an almost seamless transition to LCU. The strength of this partnership is the ability of the Covenant graduate to easily complete the BSN requirements as they work full time in only 2-3 semesters. The outcome is a highly marketable nurse with strong clinical experience and the advanced nursing education in theory, community health and leadership/management.

A Family Nurse Practitioner track within the Master of Science nursing program was introduced in Summer 2014.The FNP program was accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) and Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (SACS) in 2014. The first graduating class was in May 2016.
