National Association of School Nurses for the Deaf

Greetings to all my fellow Deaf school nurses. I am sure you have been busy checking immunizations; writing ECPs; providing education to your staff and the list goes on. So many tasks, it is often over whelming, but we do it because we are here for the kids. We know we make a difference in their education and their lives. NASND had their biennial conference, July 10-12, 2019 hosted by California School for the Deaf, Freemont. We had 38 attendees representing 17 schools and 1 Deaf nurse who we adopted as one of us. This was the first time some schools had every attended the conference. The topics were very interesting and beneficial. All the attendees became “Stop the Bleed” instructors and received a “Stop the Bleed” kit from Stanford Trauma. During the conference we had plenty of time to socialize, network and make new friends. Due to the uniqueness of our clients it is so nice to have others from different places to reach out to who understands the needs of our students. Thank you to all the speakers and planners for such a wonderful conference. With the 2019 conference in the books, we need to start thinking about our next conference in 2021. We had several schools ask questions about hosting the conference. The conference is usually 2 ½ days to 3 days. Hosting the conference is a great way to show off your campus to others from different schools that would not ordinarily get to visit your campus or area of the country. If you are interested please let myself or any board member know. Our association encourages all school nurses for the Deaf to consider joining our organization. This organization is a great way to network with other nurses in the same type of practice area. Our goal is to reach out to as many school nurses for the Deaf as we can. It is a bargain for $40 per 2 years. Members please encourage your co-workers to join our organization.
