    Childhood Injury Prevention

The Virginia: Hampton Roads Chapter of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners has been an advocate for the reduction of childhood injuries.  In 1998, the Chapter sponsored and ran an interdisciplinary continuing education conference on childhood injury prevention.  Participants included nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, physician assistants, physical therapists and health educators.

    Child Passenger Safety

The Virginia: Hampton Roads Chapter of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners has been the recipient of numerous grants from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles for the eduation of providers and caregivers in the appropriate ways to transport children.  These grants have been for our programs Keeping our Pediatric Patients Safe (1998-2001), Nurses Make a Difference (2001-2004) and our most recent program Boost 'em or Belt 'em (2004-2005).  With motor vehicle related deaths being the leading cause of death of children, we feel that appropriate guidance is an important component of pediatric care.  The Links page of this site provides significant resources for answering many of the questions that parents and providers have about transporting children.

    Motor Vehicle Safety

Motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of death of children and young adults.  Using seat belts and preventing drinking and driving are two major ways to prevent motor vehicle crash deaths and injury.  The Chapter addressed these issues in 2010 to 2012 with a program of college focused alcohol and drug impaired driving awareness.  Safe with Class partnered with nursing students from Hampton University and Norfolk State University to bring seat belt use and driving while drinking prevention programs to the communities of those two universities.
