With beginnings tracing back to 1997, Kitchener Downtown Community Health Centre evolved from an idea in the minds of a group of Kitchener's downtown residents into a thriving hub providing primary health care, health promotion and community capacity development.
KDCHC believes that health is a resource for life. The centre promotes awareness and advocates for changes in their community to encourage a broader focus for health and reduce health care access barriers. The
Centre relies on a combination of creative thinking and intentional partnerships to ensure responsiveness to the downtown community.
Kitchener Downtown CHC provides primary health care to eligible Kitchener residents and facilitates access to a broad range of health and social services through referrals and community partnerships. Primary health care takes into account the social determinants of health and a range of services that include medical care, health promotion, illness prevention and community capacity building. Kitchener Downtown CHC provides client-centred care by working with clients towards identified goals, so that people may work towards good health. We support clients to acquire knowledge and skills to participate in their own care.
Kitchener Downtown CHC focuses on clients who have barriers to accessing health care and often have health inequities. Priorities include isolated seniors, youth at risk, people with low incomes, new Canadians and people who are homeless/homelessness at risk.
Many of the CHC's health promotion and community development programs and activities are open to anyone living in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. There are some programs at the CHC that support initiatives through all of Waterloo Region.
A wide range of volunteer opportunities available throughout the Centre including: supporting client programs, creating a welcoming environment, supporting access to technology, gardening, graphic design, social media promotions and peer support.
